Homestead & Agroforestry Research Demonstration Center Design

Eric Toensmeier has been studying and consulting on regenerative agricultural practices for decades, and is the author of such seminal works as Paradise Lot:Two Plant Geeks, One-Tenth of an Acre, and the Making of an Edible Garden Oasis in the City, Perennial Vegetables: From Artichoke to ‘Zuiki’ Taro, a Gardener’s Guide to Over 100 Delicious, Easy-to-Grow Edibles, Edible Forests Gardens: Ecological Vision and Theory for Temperate Climate Permaculture & Carbon Farming: A Global Toolkit for Stabilizing the Climate with Tree Crops and Regenerative Agriculture Practices.

It was an honor to collaborate with Eric on developing plans for this new 5 acre project site in Massachusetts, converting a former conventional farm with degraded soils into a homestead and education center focused on agroforestry & perennial edible crops. Some highlights of the design project include:

  • Rainwater harvesting & stormwater management systems- tanks, bioswales, check dams & infiltration basins

  • Enhanced vehicular accessways & parking for visitors

  • ADA accessible pathways for workshop participants

  • Multifunctional Hedgerows & Wildlife habitat

  • Silvopasture Orchards & Forest Gardens

  • Restoration of erosion gully into a nutrient cycling catchment basin
